Supporting Women in STEM

This year’s International Women’s Day theme is #choosetochallenge. This theme is about challenging societal norms, celebrating women’s achievements and supporting the creation of an inclusive world. At ADITS, we are collectively choosing to challenge by supporting women in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). 24% (7) of our workforce is female, which for the technology industry, is considered quite impressive. That’s why for the month of March, we are showcasing how we support women in STEM, to spark ideas for how you can do it too.

Showcase our women in STEM

Making women in STEM visible is one of the visions of the Australian Government to create equal opportunity in STEM. Bringing awareness to the career opportunities that exist within STEM will empower women and girls to see a future for themselves in these fields. For example, this month, each of our women are taking over the stories feature on our socials platforms to share a day in their life. However, we continue to partake in initiatives year-round.

Equal-Opportunity-Employer

Equal Opportunity Employer

ADITS is an equal opportunity employer, meaning that we are committed to being a diverse and inclusive workplace that is representative of our audiences. This not only applicable to recruitment, but we make a conscious effort that all practices and processes within the workplace are respectful of a variety of voices, identities, backgrounds, experiences and perspectives.

We have also had our claims validated by external organisations. ADITS is a Great Place to Work Certified company, with 100% of our employees indicating that people here are treated fairly regardless of their gender.

Spread-the-word

Spread the word

Not only do we showcase our women on our own platforms, but we are open and inviting of other opportunities to promote our women in STEM. Recently, our Helpdesk Consultant, Mikayla, was interviewed by STEM Punks for their Future Learning Magazine, Women in Tech Edition. This was a great opportunity to provide their audience with an insight into life at ADITS and the lives of our women in Tech.

Encourage-education-and-development-opportunities

Encourage education and development opportunities

Of the seven women in our workplace, four are currently pursuing further external studies. As an organisation, we actively encourage our team to grow and develop continuously. While we often provide professional development opportunities internally, we recognise that external opportunities can be equally important. That’s why we support our women by being mindful of their additional commitments and offering flexibility, enabling us to achieve personal and workplace goals together. Whether in Brisbane, Townsville, or beyond, we’re proud to foster an environment that values growth and balance.

How to spread Christmas Cheer as a business owner

Despite what Elf says, the best way to spread Christmas cheer isn’t always singing loud for all to hear, particularly when you’re tone deaf like us. We have put together a list of ways a business owner can spread Christmas cheer during the holidays.

1. Provide exceptional customer service

The holiday season can be just as stressful as it is relaxing at times, particularly in the lead-up. Use this as an opportunity to impress your customers by lifting your standard of customer service. We would recommend that you go above and beyond by checking-in with your customers to see if they need anything. Who knows, you may even end up with a few extra sales by simply supporting those who support you.

2. Put thought into your corporate gifting

Gifting is supposed to be all about showing your appreciation for others, and I’m sorry, but a cheap bottle of wine and chocolate covered almonds doesn’t cut it. Gifting services such as LVLY make it easy to give beautiful, thoughtful gifts to your customers, Australia wide.

3. Spruce up the office with holiday decorations

The holiday season is a time of joy, fun, and can even bring an extra kick of motivation for your Team. Give this natural boost momentum! Give in to commercialisation and fill the office with decorations and holiday joy. This will not only make the workplace look devine, but increase employee morale for the festive season. Hot Tip: It’s getting really hot in the North, so converting your workplace into a Winter Wonderland may offer a place of escape for many.

4. Celebrate the year that’s been

In a business, it is often go go and no woah. The holiday period is also a time of reflection and can provide detailed insights on the year that’s been. Host an all-in Team meeting to allow everyone to share their peaks and pitfalls of the year. This will not only allow your Team to reflect on your achievements, but also refine plans and goals for the new year.

Happy Holidays from all of us! Wishing you joy, peace, and a wonderful season filled with happiness, whether you’re celebrating in Brisbane, Townsville, or beyond! 🎄✨

School Holidays? How to keep working productively

The kids are screaming because they are on school holidays. The parents are screaming because they are not. We know the juggle and feel the struggle, so we are here to help! Here are our top tips to support you in getting work done with the little ones on school holidays.

1. Discuss your situation with your Manager

Explain the circumstances to your Manager and find an effective solution. Working from Home or a hybrid model may work well for you. Many Manager’s perceptions of productivity have changed due to COVID, with the realization that Teams can work just as efficiently from home. Find an appropriate compromise and prove its effectiveness. This will make things much easier when trying to solve the same problem next year.

2. Set up a designated workspace, preferably one with a door…

One end of the kitchen table or a random desk in the living room is asking for trouble. Create a space that inspires you to want to go there each and every day. If you have to sit there for 8 hours, its gotta be good.

We also recommend a door as it acts as both physical barrier between you and the kids, and a barrier between the work and play mindset. Depending on what side of the door you are in will dictate what you are doing, making it easier to compartmentalise and focus on the important tasks. For inspiration on work spaces, listen to our Podcast episode with She Creates Co.

3. Plan activities that do not require supervision

Jumping on the trampoline is probably not the best activity for the kids when you have work to do. Plan low-risk, indoor activities when you have big ticket items to complete, such as meetings and conference calls. You could then complete monotonous tasks whilst sitting on your back patio as they bounce on the trampoline.

4. Schedule your breaks to move kids between activities

Unless you have an angel child, I imagine their attention span is abysmal. However, there may be a way around this, by using timing your breaks to move them between activities. A 10-minute break snacking on a museli bar could also be multi-tasked with moving the kids from the colouring-in table to the couch. A lunch break could be aligned with a quick trip to the park to burn some energy. Get creative!

5. Create hard exits for your work

Once that office door is shut, you are off duty. Shut down the computer, turn off email notifications on your phone and enjoy some quality time with your little family. This will also minimise working parent guilt, as the time spent with your family is uninterrupted and all about them.

Have a safe and happy Holidays! Wishing you joy and peace this festive season, whether you’re in Brisbane, Townsville, or beyond. Stay safe and celebrate with happiness! 🎄✨

Business staying open these Holidays? How to keep running effectively

Oh! Hola! Boss, you got to let me know, should I stay or should I close?

This is the question on many business owner’s minds in the lead up to the Holiday period. If you decide to stay open, we have a few tips to help keep your business running effectively and make the extra hours’ worth it.

1. Create and update all process documentation

If you are anticipating a busy holiday period, you want to make sure that everything is done as quickly and efficiently as possible. Create new and update old documentation to streamline processes and create smooth transitions between each step. Both your employees and head-ache free, ‘future you’, will thank you.

2. Repair and upgrade all technology

Before being greeted with the hustle and bustle that is the holiday period, make sure that your technology is ready to handle the workload. Simple things like upgrading that monitor from 1990 will minimise downtime and increase productivity, consequently leading to more sales. Can’t quite justify the cost? Run the numbers and see whether sales opportunity or a new machine is more costly. Then, buy the new machine because we know what the numbers will say.

3. Promote staying open to your clients

The only thing that will justify staying open is if it leads to increased revenue. Make it worth it by promoting to your clients that you are open. Simple things like updating your opening hours, changing hold tones and adding a promotional piece to your email signatures can get the word out there quickly and easily.

Hot tip: Earn those extra brownie points by using staying open as a unique selling proposition.

4. Cross-department knowledge and training

The holiday period can lead to a change in working hours and level of activity within the workspace. Make sure that your staff are trained to handle the changes. If this is your busiest period, equip your staff to handle the uptake. If this is usually the period where activity winds down, use the free time to increase your Team’s skillset, or complete any training that has been put on the back burner.

Happy Holidays! Wishing you joy, peace, and warmth this festive season, wherever you are—Brisbane, Townsville, or beyond! 🎄✨

Top 10 New Year’s Resolutions for your business

So, this is Christmas, and what have you done? Another year over, a new one just begun.
The Holiday Season can be a very motivating time, as we reflect on the year that has been, and plan for the one to come. We want to help you harness this motivation and turn it into something constructive. And what better way to do that, then to write the ultimate list of New Year’s Resolutions for your business in 2021.

1. Define your purpose

If I asked you to, ‘describe your purpose?’ do you have a true, unwavering answer? It always surprises us how many people cannot answer this, working everyday with no clear intent. So, sit down, answer this question and pin your response on a wall in your office. Then, once your purpose is clear and in sight, start living it every single day.

2. Conduct a review

How do you know where to begin the year if you don’t know the current lay of the land? Pull out the fine-tooth comb and audit your business, examining everything from simple items like email signatures, all the way to P&L statements.

3. Set realistic, measurable goals for the year

Now that you have reviewed your business, set goals to create a clear path forward. Utilise short, medium and long-term goals with deadlines to act as guideposts. And remember, the key to achieving goals is being able to measure their success. So, be sure to add metrics and identify a way to track them.

4. Learn to delegate and do more of it

When you first start a business, you wear all hats. Slowly over time, its important for those hats to gain a new owner. You should happily pass on tasks, starting with those that are your weaknesses. Also consider passing on more operational tasks, so you have time to focus on key areas such as strategic direction.

And if you can’t delegate? Delegate the delegation.

5. Schedule time to work on your business

If you completed no.2 like I asked, then this one shouldn’t be too hard to start.

Look into potentially using a methodology or Coach to consistently drive the business in one direction. At ADITS, we personally use the Scaling Up methodology, through our Certified Coach, Paul O’Dwyer from Twenty Mile March.

6. Give back to your community

It’s important to support the people who support you. Look for opportunities in your local community, or those matters that are close to your heart. Aim for a consistent approach and don’t forget to tell people all about the good work you are doing to encourage them to do the same.

7. Set aside time for yourself

Contrary to popular opinion; you can live a very full life outside of your 9-5. However, it must be prioritised. When looking at your calendar for the year, be sure to block out key dates for personal matters, first. It does mean you can no longer use the ‘I forgot’ excuse for anniversaries and birthdays… but we won’t tell anyone if it happens again…

8. Bite the bullet

“I really should do this”
“I really should get onto that”
“One day, I’ll do this”
Sound like you? It’s time to bite the bullet! Whether it’s making an investment in your company, or in yourself, it’s important you take action. Many of our customers have either completed or scheduled major technology infrastructure upgrades in the beginning few months of the year. This way, they ticked off a major item on their list and started the new year strong.

9. Invest in your people

In order for your Team to be able to do their best work, they must be equipped to do so. Create a checklist of the items your Team need to succeed and invest in them, whether it be training and development, office ergonomics, or even regular check-ins and support sessions. Whatever it is, investigate and implement.

10. Cut your losses

Sometimes, you have to know when to let things go. We all have those items that we have been trying to make work for so long and are still proving unsuccessful. Attach a metric to those items and if after one month you are making no progress, cut it out and move on.

So, there you have it; our top 10 New Year’s resolutions for your business in 2021. We do not recommend you try and tackle all resolutions at once, but rather, take small steps to achieve a couple of items, before moving on to the next. Get ready to smash your goals in 2021.

Happy New Year! Wishing you a year filled with success, joy, and new opportunities, whether you’re in Brisbane, Townsville, or beyond. 🎉✨

How to prepare your business for the Holidays

The decorations are up, the playlist full of carols is on and the holiday food bellies are coming out! BUT, is your business prepared for the holiday season? There are many items on your checklist, but here are a few from a technology standpoint.

1. Schedule disruptive work whilst you are closed

The excuses used to put off maintenance during the year are no longer relevant during the holiday period. Use the empty office to your advantage and the holiday period, wisely. Finish the office renovations, complete major infrastructure upgrades and enter 2021 prepared for success. We are staying open this Holiday Season to complete major projects for our customers, staying true to our purpose of supporting our business community to achieve their mission. Please contact us if you require assistance during this time.

2. Back up all data

Unfortunately, 2020 didn’t come with a reset button, BUT you can create one (of sorts) for your data. Do a final back up of all your documents before you leave and, preferably, before any eggnog is consumed. That way, if anything goes south, you can click the ‘restore’ button, and reset your 2021.

3. Shut down all equipment properly

You may be surprised to hear this, but your computer, as in, a man-made machine, sometimes needs a break too. When shut down, all software and programs are closed and the random access memory (RAM), which is the short-term memory in the computer is cleared. This means that when re-booted, the computer will run much more efficiently. Other benefits include extended lifespan of the technology, saving money and adding an extra security layer, as the device and its programs are closed.

4. Create “out-of-office” messages

You are leaving yourself open to negative customer experiences when you do not communicate your opening hours with your customers. Make the message clear that you are closed for business to minimise communication and eliminate the temptation of the ‘follow-up’ email. Hot Tip: The poor person who is sending emails during the holidays is clearly not sipping cocktails in Mykonos. So, be creative with your out-of-office message and use it as an opportunity to brighten someone’s day.

Happy Holidays! Sending warm wishes for a joyous season filled with happiness and cheer, whether you’re in Brisbane, Townsville, or beyond! 🎄✨

How to make the most of the Holiday Season

The silly season is nearly here and Michael Bublé is defrosting as we speak! It’s always a fun time of year; a time to escape and drown your sorrows in pudding and custard. However, we would HATE to have you return to the same problems in 2021. So, allow us to enlighten you on how to make the most of the Holiday Season.

1. Schedule major projects and maintenance

What if I told you that whilst having fun, work can be done? When the Team is away, the Labourers come out to play! Use the empty office to your advantage and book in all projects and maintenance that would usually disrupt your workspace. At ADITS, we are staying open so we can complete as many big projects as possible for our clients, whilst they are enjoying some downtime.

2. Ensure remote access

We all know the feeling: a spur of motivation to ‘quickly’ tick off an item on your forever extending ‘When I return from Holidays’ list.
‘It will only take 2 minutes,’ you try and justify to family and friends. Well, allow it to only take 2-minutes by ensuring your IT Provider has given you remote access before you leave on holiday. This way, you can quickly access all workplace systems and documentation from your phone or device in a safe and secure way.

3. Work ON the business

Use this time away from the office to (literally) look at the business from the outside. Take a course, find a mentor, update documentation, or plan for the future. Use the New Year motivation to your advantage and get stuck in! Who knows, ADITS may be launching something to help with that very soon…

4. Rest and relax

Remember, it is Christmas, after all. Resting and recharging can often be one of, if not the, best ways to utilise the Holiday Season. You can also use the time to boost other areas of your life, such as your health, wellbeing, social life, and family time. Hot Tip: Try and find sustainable practices to maintain when the hustle and bustle of work life returns.

Have a safe and happy holiday! Wishing you peace, joy, and good health this festive season, whether you’re in Brisbane, Townsville, or beyond. 🎄✨

Increased cyberattacks in our Townsville Community

Increased cyberattacks have been the result of a wave of new, sophisticated attack methods which are hitting our country. Our Townsville community have become a target area in recent times, with our most vulnerable falling victim.
ADITS’ Security Operations Manager, Dave Jacob was asked by 7News to provide actionable advice on identifying cyber scams and preventing these attacks.
A Townsville pensioner has been led up the garden path, after a scammer stole her ride-on mower.
The 65-year-old thought she’d found a buyer online – but instead she’s been left hundreds of dollars out of pocket.

Story by 7News Townsville

adits-interview

Crystal Rivers normally takes people on face value, but a recent run in with a scammer has made her think twice.

“I don’t want to not trust people, but it makes it really hard for me to trust anyone,” she said.

Last week, she advertised her ride on lawn mower for sale on Facebook marketplace. She exchanged a few messages and organised for someone to come and have a look at it

“They had a look at it and said, ‘oh yes, it’s great! I love it ‘. I did have it up for $900 but I was willing to sell it to him for $700 because he was one of the army boys” she recalled.

The deal was done and the mower was taken. Crystal was waiting for the money to go into her bank account, but, it never did.

“He called on a private number so I couldn’t call him back.”

She said the man was wearing an army uniform and drove away in a blue ute.

The incident has prompted a warning from cyber security experts.

“My advice would be to always maintain a level of mistrust and try to keep in mind you may not always know who you are dealing with,” ADITS Security Operations Manager, Dave Jacob advised.

He add that if you are selling online, then do it through PayPal.

“You can see the transaction happen automatically and make sure you don’t let go of your goods without receiving payment”.

Going away for the Holiday period? Prepare your business now

Although this year, you may not be able to (social) distance yourself as far from your desk as you would like, its important that you prepare for your time off, accordingly. We are here to help you do just that, so you can put your feet up, and keep them up!

1. Prepare your workforce

If your business is staying open, ensure that your employees are prepped to run a tight ship whilst you are away. Conduct training that specifically prepares them for the unique period. Remember, if hiring extra staff, think about whether you would hire them in a full-time position before doing so.

2. Prepare your inventory

There is nothing worse than a potential customer being turned away due to out-of-stock issues. Anticipate demand based on previous years or competitor’s sales and ensure your stock levels are adequate to make product sales and complete services.

3. Remote access

Let’s face it, problems are inevitable, and they may be issues where your attention is required. But why go into the workplace to deal with them if you don’t have to? Before you go away, ensure your IT Provider has given you sufficient remote access. This way, you can check-in from the comfort of your home office, the couch, or even the loo (Hey – we are covering all bases here!).

4. Place your IT Team on speed-dial

Although you are having downtime, your systems should not be. As an IT Provider available 24/7, we are available for any and all service requests, no matter the day or time. Please add us to your Favourites List to make contact even easier. As long as you promise not to take advantage and call us to escape Great Aunt Marge at Christmas Dinner.

Have a safe and happy Holiday! Wishing you joy, peace, and happiness this festive season, whether you’re in Brisbane, Townsville, or beyond. 🎄✨
